TREES

Trees need to be maintained and looked after. They can become dangerous due to such problems as fungal infections or weaken because of old wounds. Naturally occurring deadwood within trees can result in limbs failing and eventually falling off.  Groundwork carried out in close proximity to trees can cause harm to the root system and consequent weakness or dieback. Urban trees if neglected simply outgrow their space. Treefellas can help you overcome these obstacles in a caring and professional manner. We do this in a variety of ways:

'Why pay good money for someone to damage your trees"

DISMANTLING AND FELLING

Sometimes the removal of the tree by dismantling and lowering down may be necessary. Safety in this situation is of paramount importance. Treefellas are fully trained and certified in the dismantling of urban trees. We invest in top quality rigging equipment to ensure the safety of people and property.

CROWN REDUCTION

A crown reduction is the overall reduction of the size of the tree. This is very specialised work involving the removal of the outer section of the crown to produce a smaller sized canopy. This is used where the tree is growing too close to buildings or has simply outgrown it’s location.

CROWN THINNING/PRUNING

Trees in a wood provide protection for each other from the damaging effects of wind. Trees in open settings, such as along a street, in a park or in gardens are open to the effects of wind, especially when they are planted far apart from each other. The canopies often thicken because light reaches all parts of the tree. A thick canopy catches wind, which under certain circumstances, can damage the tree by breaking branches or blow it over in a storm. Thinning is a good way to minimize damage caused by storm winds. It allows the wind to pass through the canopy, making it more durable in a storm.

CROWN LIFTING

Lower branches often have to be removed to get them out of the way of traffic, keep them away from a building, to make signs visible that were installed too far off the ground, let in more light, open up a desirable view or create a lower trunk free of branches.
This type of pruning does much less damage to a tree than reducing the canopy size.

POLLARDING

Pollarding maintains a tree at a specified height, sometimes for centuries, and provides a formal look to landscapes. Traditionally, trees have been maintained at 20-30ft tall. Pollarding can be used to keep a large, mature tree small if it was located in a place with restricted soil space, such as a planter, narrow soil strip, car park or footpath cut out. It is also useful to control size if a tree has been planted too close to structures such as buildings, street lighting or electric wires.

IVY REMOVAL

Ivy is a problem in trees because the added weight in the tree canopy can cause the tree to become unstable, the evergreen leaves shade the leaves of the host tree causing lack of light and poor growth.  This can eventually lead to die back of the host tree.  Ivy can be stripped out of the crown and from the stem, allowing the tree to recover.  However, it should be noted that ivy is an important source plant for many  wildlife species. The decision to strip out the ivy should be based upon your own personal preference, the location and the health of the tree. Pictures can be found in our photo gallery that show the damage caused by ivy and the burrowing insects that live within.  We recommend that trees close to houses should not be allowed to become ivy ridden.

STUMP REMOVAL

When trees are removed, the stump is cut as low as possible to the ground as conditions allow. The stump can be chemically treated to speed up the decaying process, left higher to make into a feature such as a bird table, left to decay naturally creating a food source for birds, or mechanically removed using a stump grinder. We will discuss the various options with you to help you make a decision.
